No wonder I couldn't f*cking sleep

Hey BrainPals,

What’s up?

For those of you that don’t know me IRL, it’s been a long time. I haven’t had much time for content lately, as I’ve been quite busy with my business that I run full-time. This is my sixth year in business. I started my biz from the living room of a four bedroom apartment when I was living down the street from OSU. I’d say “Go Bucks!” but I really couldn’t care less about football. I’m not a fan of Alex Jones either, but I do find this video on sports that someone shared with me pretty funny 😂

I do pay attention to the main news and the big events. I actually have a few sports personalities I like, like Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and KOBE!!! Bryant. I love fitness and seeing people maximize their potential. So I don’t hate sports. I just can’t get myself to sit through an entire sports game. I have too much ADHD for that. How do you think I even got on this topic when I started writing this post to talk about sleep. ADHD: It keeps you on your toes.

Oh yeah, anyways, so I haven’t been posting much content because I’ve been busy work. That’s not usually enough to stop me, but I’ve also had less energy than ever. Years of bad sleep have started to catch up with me. I’ve never been a good sleeper, and I’ve tried ALL the tips. I’m a much better sleeper than I was when I was younger, but I still don’t sleep like a normal person. It takes me too long to fall asleep, and I wake up a lot in the middle of the night. When I was a wee little boy, that way ok. Now that I’m almost 30, I have to be more mindful about my sleep.

So I tried a bunch of new sleep strategies: mouth taping, nose strips, and a whole bunch of sh*t. No significant changes in my sleep.

I happened to be on Reddit having an ADHD moment. I think I was on the biohackers subreddit. People are always talking about sleep there. Quite a few people were talking about sleep apnea. This is basically when you stop breathing during sleep. Of course when you stop breathing, your body is like “Wtf?” and wakes you up, causising you to get poor sleep.

I looked a bit more into sleep apnea, and apparently 18% of adult Americans experience some form of it. It’s something that a lot of people have but aren’t aware of it. I thought it was worth getting tested. A company called Lofta (no affiliation) does an easy home sleep apnea test. Test is about $150. Considering bad sleep costs way more than $150, I ordered the test.

Here’s a pic of me wearing the sleep test before I went to bed. Can you tell I look like a sleepy boy?

24 hours later, I got my result. Diagnosed with sleep apnea. No wonder I couldn’t f*cking sleep. I would always get tips from people: magnesium, melatonin, marijuana, alcohol (horrible idea btw), none of that sh*t improved my sleep.

I’m actually excited about this. For as long as I can remember, I’ve not gotten good sleep. I’m excited to get treated for sleep apnea. The fact that I’ve been grinding through life with untreated sleep apnea means that I’ve basically only been using a fraction of my power and intelligence. This means… You ain’t seen nothing yet 😎

I’m reminded of the shows I grew up watching where two characters are battling, and then one character reveals “I’m not even using my full power 😏.”

So, what does this mean for you?

Yeah. So I’m getting back into content. I’ve missed making content. One thing I want to know is: what do you want to see? What topics are you curious about?

Speaking of sports, I’ve been studying this guy named Jim Rome. I used to see him on TV and think “That guy has the same last name as me!” Anyways, I saw an old clip of his online recently that made me Lol

Note: I don’t endorse being an asshole like that.

I went down a Jim Rome rabbit hole, and I discovered he’s made a pretty loyal fan base. One thing he does is he gets his audience involved a lot in his content. This is fairly common now, but he started doing this in the 90s and early 2000s. He was one of the first sports personalities to create a community. They even have a name for their little tribe, “the clones”. Even all these years later, Jim is on a first name basis with many of his audience members and will call them out saying things like “Billy in Tucson says the Buckeyes are overrated.”

I think I’d like to do something like that: get more audience participation. I want to be sure I’m talking about what you want to hear and writing about what you want to read. I might even want to shout you out because you deserve it. So, my friend, let me know. What neuroscience or psychology topics are you interested in? Or, do you have any random tea / news you want to share. I can relate that to the topic I post about too. Just lmk, and I’ll figure it out from there.
